The new regulation of tourist apartment licenses announced by the Catalan government has generated several reactions among the Girona city councils. Most of them have expressed caution and want to carefully analyze the regulations when they are published in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat of Catalonia (DOGC). Some municipalities, such as Palafrugell and Llançà, view regulation positively as a way of guaranteeing the right to housing, while others, such as Castell-Platja d'Aro, consider that local realities are very different and have to be considered.
The Apartment Tourist Association (ATA) in the Girona regions has warned that, on the Costa Brava, between 40 and 60% of the apartments with a current license will have to be eliminated. In the Girona district, some twenty municipalities exceed the threshold of 10% of tourist apartments over the current housing stock.
In general, the regulations have been received with caution and interest by the Girona city councils, since they consider that it could help regulate the tourist apartment sector and, at the same time, protect the right to housing for residents.
